We would like to cordially invite you, our dear colleagues, to take part in Lente 3, a photojournalism competition that would highlight your excellence in military photography.

The 2008 edition of Lente, again led by the Defense Corps of the Philippines (DPC) in cooperation with the AFP National Development Support Command (AFPNDSC), aims to grant due recognition to amateur and professional photographers who have captured heroic moments of the men and women of the Armed Forces.

The theme of this year’s Lente competition is, “The New Face of Heroism – Peace and Development.”

HOW TO JOIN:

  1. The competition is open to civilian and military photographers in the Philippines. There are two major categories and an extra category that the photographer -- hereinafter called COMPETITORS -- can participate:
    1. “The new face of heroism… DEVELOPMENT!”a major category that depicts heroism in the AFP through development-related activities.
    2. “The new face of heroism… PEACE!” -- a major category that depicts heroism in the AFP through peace-related activities.
    3. “GENERAL-OPEN”an extra category that depicts other forms of heroism in the AFP.
  2. Each COMPETITOR can participate in all categories with no limit in the number of entries -- hereinafter called SHOTS.
  3. The SHOTS must be in colored digital format and can be entered into the competition by submitting the electronic copies of photos in a compact disk (CD) sealed in a brown envelope containing the filled-up registration form available in DPC or GHQ-PIO. Registration is FREE.
  4. All SHOTS, published or unpublished depicting AFP peace and development activities, must be in JPEG format with the appropriate high resolution or the original RAW format. The SHOTS must also be accompanied by 5x7 inch prints with the same cropping as that which was entered in the contest, plus one (1) 2x2 picture of the photographer. No MANIPULATIONS or TRICK SHOTS. Minimum editing is allowed.
  5. The SHOTS must be named by the COMPETITORS each in such a way as not to show the identity of the owner. The identity and profile of the COMPETITORS will not be revealed during the competition except after the announcement of the results and the winners.
  6. In case the submitted SHOTS do not follow the theme, the SHOTS will be put in the GENERAL-OPEN category by the ORGANIZERS, composed of three members from the DPC, two members from the AFPNDSC, and one member from the PIO, GHQ.
  7. Where a category of the SHOT is not properly indicated on the submitted registration form, ORGANIZERS will determine its category. Published photo entries must have been taken from January 2005 to the present.
  8. SHOTS entered in the competition must be still photographs (not animated), regardless of the techniques used. It must not depict porn, hate-messages, excessive violence, illegal substances, or nudity. Composite or computer-manipulated SHOTS shall automatically be disqualified.
  9. All SHOTS automatically becomes the DPC and the AFP property who will have complete and unrestricted access of the SHOTS to promote the AFP and its services at any point after the close of the competition.
  10. The 1st prize winners of all categories, EXCEPT for the GENERAL-OPEN category, are eligible for the photo of the year award.

  1. Photos that have won in any local or international contest and Lente 1 and 2, are automatically disqualified. Photos previously used by the AFP in any of its posters/information campaign, materials, are automatically disqualified.
  2. The ORGANIZERS shall have the discretion to disqualify any entry found to be violating the rules of the contest. The decision of the board of judges shall be final.
  3. Competition will start on 10 April 2008. Deadline for submission of SHOTS is on 15 August 2008 at the DPC office/AFP PIO, GHQ, Camp General Emilio Aguinaldo, Quezon City.
  4. Rules and criteria for judging:
    1. Judging of the competition will take place in September 2008 by a panel of judges composed of at least five members from different sectors of the society.
    2. The members of the panel of judges will be selected by the ORGANIZERS. The chairperson of the panel of judges will be selected among the members of the panel only.
    3. The panel of judges will choose the three winners in each category and the Photo of the Year award. ORGANIZERS must ensure that their entries are presented in the best possible condition for competition. 
    4. Scoring is on a basis of 100 percentage points: thirty percent (30) for technical merit, another thirty percent (30%) for artistic merit, and forty percent (40%) for impact: 

Technical Merit (30%) 

  • Arrangement of visual elements (line, shape, value, texture, color, direction, size, perspective)

Artistic Merit (30%) 

  • Theme: Does the photo capture a truly heroic moment?
  • Message: Does the photo have a clear and positive message?

Impact (40%) 

  • Does the photo have a stimulating effect? The work of art is said to be aesthetically pleasing to the eye if the elements within the work are arranged in a balanced compositional way.
  • Does the photo have a very good + immediate + dramatic overall impact on the audience?
